What you need to know about papillomas

The fastest, easiest and most effective method of getting rid of papillomas is to remove them. The procedure itself takes only a few seconds. However, before this, you need to be examined by a dermatologist who will determine the type of tumour, the extent of the lesion and perform a dermatoscopy. In addition, the doctor will select the best method of removal and provide recommendations for skin care after the procedure.

Papilloma removal is recommended not only for aesthetic reasons, but also for medical reasons. Despite the fact that these lesions are benign, their cells may contain the human papillomavirus (HPV), which can spread throughout the body and cause new lesions.

Papillomas can also be a consequence of a pre-cancerous condition or a sign of a progressive skin cancer. That is why it is not recommended to remove such lesions on your own - you need to consult a specialist.

If papillomas are left untreated, especially if they are located in traumatic areas (neck, décolleté, waist), there is a risk of their degeneration into malignancy.

A skin papilloma is a benign growth that protrudes above the surface of the skin. It can be smooth or resemble small warts or finger-shaped growths. Most often, papillomas appear in places where the skin rubs frequently, for example, in folds.

Anyone can develop such growths, regardless of age or lifestyle. However, the likelihood of their occurrence increases under the influence of the following factors:

  • Skin damage - microtraumas create a favourable environment for the development of the virus.
  • Overweight - contributes to skin friction and increases the risk of papillomas.
  • Hormonal disorders - changes in the hormonal balance can provoke their appearance.

Methods of treatment

Esteva Clinic uses the most modern and effective methods of removing such warts.

Electrocoagulation of papillomas

A fast and safe method of papilloma removal, in which radio waves destroy the cells of the tumour, gradually reducing its size until it disappears completely. Electrocoagulation of papillomas is suitable not only for the skin, but also for more sensitive areas, including mucous membranes.

Approximately 40-45 minutes before the removal of papillomas by the radio wave method, a special drug is applied to the treated area for anaesthesia to minimise discomfort.

When removing papillomas on the hands or feet, curettage (scraping of tissue) is additionally performed – an important stage that ensures complete removal of the tumour together with the root, and not just its surface part. This helps prevent the papilloma from growing again. After the procedure, the removal site usually heals within a week.

The radio wave method of papilloma removal has a number of advantages:

  • Minimal impact on the healthy skin around the growth
  • Thanks to local anaesthesia, the procedure is painless or with minimal discomfort

The radio wave method is recommended for removing papillomas in the following areas

  • face area
  • décolleté, chest and armpits;
  • Hands, including palms.

Cryodestruction (liquid nitrogen)

Cryodestruction is a method of removing papillomas using liquid nitrogen. Under the influence of ultra-low temperatures, the tissues of the tumour are destroyed, which leads to its death. This method is suitable for removing papillomas that do not require histological examination.

Advantages of papilloma removal with liquid nitrogen:

  • Speed of the procedure – it takes only a few minutes.
  • Minimal discomfort – only a slight tingling sensation is possible.
  • No age restrictions – suitable for patients of any age.
  • Bloodlessness and absence of scars – the skin heals naturally

At the beginning of the procedure, liquid nitrogen is applied directly to the papilloma, which leads to its rapid destruction. On average, 3 to 6 freezing cycles are performed to remove papillomas with liquid nitrogen, each lasting up to 30 seconds. The duration and number of freezing cycles depend on the location, size, and age of the tumour.

Laser removal of papillomas

Laser papilloma removal is one of the most modern and popular procedures, as it allows you to effectively eliminate neoplasms without affecting healthy tissue. The principle of laser papilloma removal is similar to the radio wave method, but in this case, it is performed using a laser beam.

Laser papilloma removal is the optimal method for difficult areas, in particular:

  • Near the nail plates – both on the hands and feet, where precise and safe removal of the neoplasm is important.
  • On the feet, including the plantar area – effectively removes even deep papillomas, minimising the risk of recurrence.
